We have already talked in another post about what Cryptokitties are and why there is so much hype, and the genetic algorithm deal. Now, let’s cover some of the basics of getting started in this addictive little game that is taking the cryptocurrency world by storm.
Is there a cost involved?
Unless you were able to get in on the ground floor, yes. Those early adopters were given a free kitty to get them started. Everyone else has to buy their kitties.
What will I need?
Well, there are a few things you will need to have ready to go to get going. Those include:
- A computer that is running the desktop version of either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. This can be a desktop or laptop computer. Cryptokitties will not work with Internet Explorer or Safari.
- MetaMask, which is a digital wallet that is specifically set up for use with web applications
- Ether, a digital payment method that is used to power Cryptokitties.
How do I install MetaMask?
First things first. You need a digital wallet and you need to have some money in it. (And treat it with respect, like you would any other bank account. Keep the information secure).
Note that sometimes you will log into Cryptokitties and see a lock screen on your My Kitties page. All you have to do is click on the MetaMask extension and enter your password. This will unlock the feature. This feature is for your protection. Don’t panic!
In the US, this is really super easy. You can buy them right directly in MetaMask. ETH, the abbreviation for ether, is a digital currency that makes it so that your game will function properly.
If you are not in the US, you will have to make use of an exchange. The easiest way to do this is by using Coinbase and subsequently moving the ETH to your MetaMask wallet from your Coinbase wallet. Unfortunately, you have to make this transfer as no other wallets will work with Cryptokitties.
Next time, we will talk about buying and selling Cryptokitties. Happy Cryptoing!
